Equinox

Today is the vernal equinox up here in the northern hemisphere. This means that the daylight will last as long as the night, and tomorrow will be longer than tonight: spring has sprung. The snow in the sky may disagree, but science is firm on this point - the days are getting longer, the weather should be getting warmer, flowers will flower and lambs will be born.

The equinox is a pretty awesome time of year, because it’s one of those times when we actually notice our position in the solar system. The night is the same length as the day because the axis of rotation of the earth is perpendicular to the line joining the earth to the sun.

From now until the summer solstice, the circle that we trace on the sphere that the earth occupies will tip towards the sun day by day, and the sun will rise and set over a more and more southerly point on the horizon. As a result, the days get longer and the nights shorter.
